Top Tips for the Festival

Apr 22, 2013

Let the countdown begin…

1. SCOPE THE SCHEDULE

You already know that the second annual festival weekend will be a smorgasbord of sips, samples and new-found favorite foods. But we’d recommend that in order to maximize your experience, you should definitely check out the schedule in advance in order to plan which demos, panels and activities you won’t want to miss. Even the best-laid plans have a tendency to change, but it never hurts to set your wishlists in advance! Seating begins 15 minutes prior to the each demo and will be on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to arrive early. Lucky for you, we’ve developed a mobile app to help your Festival to-do list as organized – and accessible! – as possible…

2. GET THE APP

iPhone and Android users, check out the video below for all of the app’s awesome features. From the Custom Schedule feature that lets you mark your favorites, the Interactive Festival Map that lets you click on a tent to see what’s going on at that moment to the robust content about the Festival’s top talent, you’ll want to have this powerful tool on your phone and at your fingertips!

3. PICK UP YOUR PASSES

To pick up your SAVOR Passes (or TASTE Passes & add-ons purchased after April 14th), enter The Four Seasons Hotel Lobby & turn right to take the elevator up to the 4th floor. Turn left & proceed to Boardroom 416, the first door on your left.

Dates & Times of Operation

Thu 4/25 – 10am-8pm
 Fri 4/26 – 10am-8pm Sat 4/27 – 8am-6pm Four Seasons Hotel Austin 98 San Jacinto Blvd
Austin, TX 78701

4. REGISTER YOUR PASS

Once you receive your SAVOR Pass, make sure you Register Your Badge to gain access to contests at the park and special offers within the Grand Tasting. We’ve added unique RFID capabilities to the actual passes to give you access to great upgrades, contests, recipes and more. Register when you pick up your passes at Check-In and immediately be entered to win a KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Whether you’re learning the secrets from master chefs in demo tents around the park or enjoying a new-found favorite glass of wine in the Grand Tasting, you can share your story on social media and receive recipes, tips and prizes by simply scanning your badge with one of our dedicated #afwfest to go! volunteers as you exit each demo. Think of it as a new way to keep track of your favorite chefs, snacks and sips from the epicurean extravaganza.

5. WHERE TO GO AND HOW TO GET THERE

Butler Park & Republic Square Park

The Austin FOOD & WINE Festival is located at Butler Park, and the main entrance to the Festival is on Riverside Drive, between South 1st Street and South Lamar. Taste of Texas and Rock Your Taco events are also being held at Republic Square Park, 422 Guadalupe Street between 4th Street and 5th Street.

Parking

As part of a VIP Pass to the Festival, VIP Passholders will have dedicated on-site parking at The Long Center. In addition, there are several easy options for getting to Butler Park. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis within easy walking distance of Butler Park at the following locations:
  • 301 Congress ($7)

  • 300 San Antonio ($7)

  • One Texas Center Garage at Barton Springs Rd. & S. 1st St. ($7)

  • Austin Convention Center Parking Garage at 2nd & Brazos ($8)
  • Austin City Hall at Cesar Chavez & Guadalupe (Free until 5pm; $5)
Handicap parking is available at all of the above locations. For info on special-needs access and accommodations, please write access@austinfoodandwinefestival.com. There will also be ample bike parking available next to the main entrance on Riverside Drive. You must provide your own lock.

6. MEET THE TALENT

Stop by the Book Signing Tent on both Saturday and Sunday, then make sure to check out the Festival Store to take home your own copy of featured books from some of the Festival’s top chefs and talent. Added bonus? You can also snag a few other useful culinary gifts and gadgets while you’re at it.

7. Savor Your Weekend

There’s still time to purchase a SAVOR Pass for your chance to enjoy the Taste of Texas Festival Kickoff (with music from Delta Spirit and Whiskey Shivers) on Friday night and the Rock Your Taco Celebrity Chef Showdown (with music from Allen Stone) on Saturday night. Trust us, these parties-under-the-stars are the perfect way to wind down your day in the Live Music Capital of the World. Not to mention your access to the dedicated VIP Lounge all weekend long, where you’ll be able to kick back in the Four Hands Furniture-outfitted area while enjoying pours from Silver Oak, Twomey Cellars and GH Mumm. Cheers!

8. REMEMBER YOUR PASS AND YOUR ID

You’ll need both to get into anything and everything at the Festival — don’t leave home without them! Also, remember that the Festival is 21+.

9. KEEP IT SOCIAL

We’ll be sharing live dispatches from Butler Park all weekend, so make sure you follow along and join the conversation on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! Our official hashtag for the weekend is: #afwfest

10. IT’S SPRINGTIME IN TEXAS

Although most events will be held in individually tented areas, you’ll likely spend some time in the Texas sun, so make sure to throw some sunscreen in your bag and take advantage of the complimentary Evamor water found throughout the park. Also, events at Butler Park and Republic Square Park take place on park land, so keep in mind (for the purpose of footwear) that although there is temporary flooring in some areas, the grounds will be grass-covered as well.

Bonus: FOOD REPUBLIC INTERVIEW LOUNGE

Our friends at Food Republic are bringing their culinary dialogues back to AFWF this year with The Food Republic Interview Lounge at the W Austin on Friday, April 26. Kicking off at 11 a.m. and running all day, the lounge will feature live interviews with top-name chefs and comedians in town for the Austin FOOD & WINE Festival and Moontower Comedy Festival like Graham Elliot, Christina Tosi, Paul Qui, and Michael Ian Black. You definitely don’t want to miss this uniquely Austin experience, taking place in the glassed-in room overlooking Moody Theater, home of the iconic ACL Live TV show.
See you at the Fest!
