ACL 2012: Food at the Fest

You already know that the Austin City Limits Music Festival is chock-full of the best bands and artists around, but did you also realize that it packs a pretty powerful culinary punch as well? That’s right – Austin EATS features some of the most local, unique dishes and restaurants that make Austin a foodie destination.

From banh mi and brisket to gourmet ice cream sandwiches, we’re out and about all weekend long, bringing you food-focused updates and news from the heart of The Live Music Capital of the World. We caught up with a few of the fan favorites to talk everything from Festival fare to what’s it like to be a part of Austin’s burgeoning food community…

Stubb’s is an Austin classic. Founded in the 1970’s their focus has always been on great food, live music and good friends. Definitely a go-to destination for brisket and a fun time.

“Everyone from all over the world comes to ACL. It’s awesome! The best part is that in Austin you can have everything you want, and you know it’s going to be good.” — Maricela Martinez, Catering Assistant, Stubb’s BBQ

Another classic Austin establishment, Mansion at Judge’s Hill is a boutique hotel in Austin that opened its namesake restaurant in 2003. Since then, they’ve been serving local tastemakers and out-of-town travelers alike and are now happy to be sharing a slice of Austin with ACL fans as well. Head here for tasty gluten-free options and their ever-popular Wild Game Dogs.

“I’m so excited to be a part of Austin’s growing food scene! It’s all about experimenting and not taking yourself too seriously. Plus, I love the focus on local fare and the farm-to-table aspect of dining. We love to support local growers!” — Lisa Wiedemann, GM & Partner, Mansion at Judge’s Hill

2012 Austin FOOD & WINE chef, Second Bar + Kitchen’s David Bull was behind the scenes with his signature culinary flair, keeping fans happy — and well-fed – with his pork belly banh mi. A must-try for any foodie out there!

“The vibe, the energy – ACL is awesome. The people are just so cool and nice. And Austin? It’s one of the most positive and embracing places to be. Just like here at the Festival – I’ve got Mighty Cone to my left and Luke’s Inside Out to my right.” — Chef David Bull, Second Bar + Kitchen

Everyone’s favorite make-your-own ice cream sandwich truck brought their creative concoctions to ACL and let’s just say – people couldn’t have been happier to enjoy a cold treat during the hot day! While the usual vanilla ice cream + chocolate cookie combo was a standout staple, the more offbeat combination of sweet potato marshmallow ice cream and a snickerdoodle cookie was the sleeper hit of the day.

“I love the Austin food community – it’s such an inspiring place! I mean we’re here with the farmers market. How cool is that?!” — Caitlin Close, Events Operation Manager, Coolhaus.

See you tomorrow when we talk to the fans about their weekend tips & tricks for eating good at the fest!
