AFWF Chefs Talk Breakfast Tacos

Ever wonder where the chefs eat? With all eyes on Austin in the coming weeks, we asked a few of our 2014 Festival Chefs for their top breakfast taco spots across the city. Not only do they tell us where to go and why – they told us what to order, too. You’re welcome!

Favorite Spot: Mi Madre’s (Manor Rd.)
The Pick: Bacon, Potato Egg & Cheese
Why I love it: “It’s the real deal. The tacos are a good size at a good price and you can tell that they are made with love!”

Favorite Spot: Taco More (E. Riverside Dr.)
The Pick: Potato, Bacon & Cheese
Why I love it: “I don’t like to eat eggs on things unless it’s raw on tartare & carbonara. I love their salsa bar. They have 5 or more salsas to choose from, plus cucumber slices on the side – a little lime & salt and I’m all set. You never see fresh cucumbers on a salsa bar, and I can never get enough cucumbers. Their salsa verde is packed with chunks of avocado.”

Favorite Spot: La Mexicana Bakery (S. 1st St.)
The Pick: Pambazo and Pastries
Why I love it: “I go because it’s in my hood and Mexican people enjoy its grassroots ambience. It’s pretty good!”

Favorite Spot: El Tacorrido (S. 1st St.)
The Pick: Bacon, Egg & Cheese on Flour with Molcajete Salsa.
Why I love it: “It’s right up the street! Also, don’t miss the Equinox Espresso and Horchata – so good!”

Favorite Spot: Tamale House (Airport Blvd.)
The Pick: Migas with Cheese
Why I love it: “I like going to Tamale House because it’s great, authentic Tex-Mex, and I’ve been going there since I was a kid. There’s nothing better than sitting on the steps and eating their Migas with Cheese out of a to-go container.”

Ned Elliott

CHEF/OWNER, FOREIGN & DOMESTIC

Favorite Spot: La Fruta Feliz (Manor Rd.)
The Pick: Chorizo Taco or any of the Tortas and Gorditas
Why I love it: “It’s near where I live and off the beaten path. It’s just good, soulful cooking with no pretense.”
