Kazu Fukumoto moved from Japan in 1997 and attended Pepperdine University. He moved to Austin in 1999, where he began his culinary career at Musashino Sushi Dokoro. Fukumoto started as a dishwasher and worked his way up to Sushi chef and apprenticed under Takehiko Fuse, owner/chef of Musashino. He worked at Musashino for 16 years, during which he served as head chef for 10 years.
Fukumoto has honed his traditional Japanese skills by studying under Takehiko (Smokey) Fuse and also studying at CIA (taste of Japan course) in Napa Valley. After leaving Musashino, he traveled back to his homeland and studied traditional Yakitori skills at Hiroya Yakitori Restaurant in Tokyo.
Fukumoto loves to share his passion for food with everyone around him. He was always inspired to one day open his own traditional Japanese restaurant. On September 3rd, 2015 Fukumoto Sushi and Yakitori Izakaya opened on East 6th, specializing in traditional Japanese cuisine with focus on Sushi and Yakitori.
